Historic Banda Neira

Cruising the Bandas, or “Spice Islands” of yore, and its main town of Banda Neira, is to travel back in both historical and geological time. This small, remote group of ten islands in the middle of the Banda Sea once took on global importance, and ultimately launched the waves of European colonial expansion to East Asia during the 16th and 17th centuries. The focus initially was on securing supplies of exotic and valuable spices, primarily nutmeg, which was highly prized, and endemic only to Banda and the Moluccas. This led to the establishment of Indonesia’s first Dutch settlement, and the Dutch Governor General’s palatial headquarters on Banda Niera can still be seen to this day. (Batavia, now Jakarta, came much later).
